Description
In 1937, amidst the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War, Joan Miró created this striking work to raise funds and awareness for the Republican cause. Originally intended to be a postal stamp for the French government, the design was later expanded into this large-format poster to reach a global audience.
The artwork features a highly stylized figure—a Catalan peasant—wearing a traditional red barretina (beret). The figure is depicted with an oversized, clenched fist raised in a defiant salute, a universal symbol of struggle and strength. Miró utilized bold, primary colors and abstract celestial elements like stars and a moon to ground the political message in his signature surrealist dreamscape.
The text, “Aidez l’Espagne” (Help Spain), serves as a direct plea for international intervention. This poster stands alongside Picasso’s Guernica as a definitive example of how art can be used as a weapon for justice and a bridge for global solidarity.
